We all run late from time to time. For some of us, this means we don’t get to put on our make up or sit while we drink our first cup of coffee but what about washing your hair? If you keep falling back on dry shampoo, it may be time to start forgoing that option. Dry shampoo has been around for a while, but in recent years it’s become a must-have. The concept of dry shampoo seems ideal, because who wants to wash and style their hair every day! However convenient it is, using it daily could be causing a lot of damage to your hair, especially your scalp.
If you are one of the few that haven’t heard of dry shampoo, let us explain. Dry shampoo is designed to absorb oil and dirt that builds up at the roots of your hair every day. It is meant to be used in between washes promising a fresh smelling and voluminous hair day. It is found in an aerosol can and various powder versions. The aerosol dry shampoo is used similarly like aerosol hair spray and it is applied in the same fashion with the exception that you apply it at your roots. Though the concept seems effective in actuality dry shampoo doesn’t help remove the build-up of oil and dirt – it only masks it.
1. Does dry shampoo actually clean your hair?
The short answer is no. Dry shampoos could never be a replacement to actually cleansing your hair with shampoo and water. If you rely heavily on dry shampoo to get you to your next wash you may need to start reconsidering it. Risking damage to your hair follicles and potential dandruff is just not worth it.
2. Is talc in dry shampoo safe?
Again another no here. While talc is still used in some beauty products and regarded as ‘safe.’ talc has been linked to cancer. There are safer ingredients out there, consider opting out of those that use talc.
3. Is dry shampoo truly bad for my hair?
Dry shampoo can be very harmful to your scalp and hair if used long term. To maintain healthy hair, the impurities need to be removed from your scalp with a proper wash so that your hair follicles found at the root of your hair, can really breathe. Dry shampoo tends to do the opposite. It clogs your hair follicles and absorbs natural oils that your scalp needs to be healthy. Using dry shampoo regularly will only cause build-up which can hair loss, stunted hair growth, and dandruff.
Using dry shampoo sparingly is a nice convenient way to get through the 3 days of camping or the occasional missed hair wash but it could never replace properly cleansing your hair. Just like overwashing your hair can be damaging so can not washing your hair – in the end, balance is key. Happy hair washing!
