Modern-day hair transplant surgeries have now become minimally-invasive surgeries thanks to the innovation of technology such as SmartGraft®. Before SmartGraft®, hair restoration procedures required surgery, leaving a large linear scar across the back of the patient's head. Recovery time was slow and uncomfortable.
The procedure can now be done with more precision in less time than many other methods. Hair transplants performed at our office are more effective, safer, and produce natural-looking results than ever before. We are answering common questions, addressing post-care, and after-care therapies that will help your newly transplanted hair follicles take root!
Q: If balding is heredity, can hair transplants reverse it long-term?
Yes, hair transplants can reverse balding as, during hair transplants, we take hairs from the back of the head which are more resistant to aging and hormonal changes. These hairs are then transplanted typically to the hairline and/or crown and need little maintenance even after being transplanted to the top of the head. - Dr. Jin
Q: Can hair change texture once it’s established?
Yes, hair texture can change once hair is transplanted however, it is very unlikely if a patient continues with maintenance treatments such as hair PRP. With hair transplants and hair PRP, we want the hairs to become and stay thicker and coarser. - Dr. Jin
Q: Are the results permanent?
The results are visibly long-lasting and are considered to be permanent. Following your post-care routine will directly impact how the newly transplanted hair grafts will secure and root. This will typically take 8 to 14 days, keep in mind that it takes time for your skin to heal. For the first three months after treatment, it's typical that strands of your hair may fall out. After your hair transplant has healed completely, you will notice follicles of your own hair will begin to come in.
We asked one of our previous patients to share their experience -
Q: How is life after hair transplants?
Life is great! My hair is thicker and fuller after undergoing my hair transplant in 2019 to fill in my crown. Also, most importantly I feel more confident. I am so happy I went through with the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) with Dr. Richard Jin at RJ Clinical Institute. – P.M.
Recovery, Post-Care & Possible Side Effects
While the recovery is straightforward, following a regular aftercare program ensures a speedy recovery and contributes to the long-lasting results you desire. After the procedure, you will be given detailed instructions to ensure your new grafts are not damaged, including taking extra care while sleeping.
Sleeping can be tricky - for at least a week after surgery, sleep with your head back and slightly elevated. The first three to four nights are the highest risk of swelling and sleeping in an elevated position will keep the swelling in your scalp and forehead under control, speeding up recovery.
To avoid infection, you'll need to be particularly vigilant for a few days after surgery to ensure that your bed, pillowcases, and linens are all clean. Wash them in a detergent that is free of allergens that may irritate your scalp. During the healing process, some bleeding from the scalp is to be expected.
For the first few days after your procedure, it’s common to suffer from:
• a tight, achy, and swollen scalp
• temporary scabbing
• minimal bleeding
After your procedure:
• During the first two weeks after surgery, avoid exposing your scalp to direct sunlight for significant periods of time.
• Avoid smoking and consuming alcohol to speed up the healing process because they directly damage the blood flow to your head.
• Avoid any physical activity or exercise that causes you to sweat or raises your heart rate. Perspiration irritates the scalp, which is not ideal for hair transplants.
• It's best not to touch your scalp, especially if you're itching.
Post-Care Therapies
At RJ Clinical, we have the advantage of being able to offer several post-care therapies. Patients are encouraged to receive PRP Sessions every 3 months, low-laser light therapy (LLLT), and continue to take Viviscal Pro – a dietary supplement that promotes existing hair growth. Pairing our post-care instructions with SmartGraft® hair transplant, we know we can help grow your hair!
